Not long now until November, which means bonfire night is very near...

While some pets aren't fazed by the sound of fireworks, others find them very distressing. So, what can you do to help keep them happy?

1. Save dog walks for daylight hours
2. Keep dogs and cats indoors when it's dark
3. Give them a safe hidey hole in the house, for example a covered crate or bed
4. Play music to help distract them - Classic FM has a dedicated 'Pet Classics' show around bonfire night or you can find calming playlists on Youtube

Now it’s my privilege to care for her in her golden years and I wouldn’t change a thing 🥰

When patience pays off…

I’ve been working with Max and Lola’s owner over the past few weeks to help build their confidence enough for regular walks with me.

This has involved several home visits where we’ve slowly progressed from me just being present and hands off to getting hands on, able to put on their walking gear and head out for a walk together without their owner being around. Taking the time to earn a dog’s trust at their own pace is so worthwhile, building a positive relationship for the future ❤️

Yes, it's another weather post, but it's so important to be aware of how extreme temperatures can affect your pet.

Did you know that there are certain risk factors that make dogs more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses?

These include being flat-faced, thick-coated, older or overweight. Dogs with conditions respiratory and heart conditions are also higher risk, as heat means organs have to work harder to keep body temperature down.

On a first walk, I like to keep dogs on lead so they can get used to me and do some testing on lead. This is important, as some dogs may be perfect recalling to you as their owner, but may be less reliable with someone they don't know as well. Testing safely and building trust helps reinforce positive interactions and sets us up for future success!

Knowing about triggers for your dog upfront - like seeing other dogs or prey animals - is also vital, so I can select the right locations and be alert while we're together.

Don't think off-lead walks will work with your dog? No problem!

Today is going to be the hottest day we’ve had for the past few, which is why it’s extremely important to be heat aware - for yourself and your dog. I’ve posted recently with some ideas to help keep cool, but here’s another reminder:

🚰 Stay hydrated and keep fresh water available
☀️ Avoid being outside when the temps peak
🐕 Switch walks to early morning / late evening
🐾 Check pavement temp with the back of your hand before your walk to avoid burnt paws
🧩 Give your dog puzzle games to play indoors to keep them occupied
🍦 Fill and freeze a kong toy or lickimat for your dog
🛟 Fill a paddling pool in the garden - monitor your dog and check the water temp regularly
⛱️ Make sure dogs always have access to shade

Watch for signs of heat exhaustion, which for dogs include:
- red tongue and gums
- drooling / frothy mouth
- excessive panting
- lethargy
- lack of coordination
- vomiting
- collapse
