What's 'canicross'?

Canicross is cross-country running while attached to your dog. It originally started as a way to train sled dogs in the summer season when there was no snow, but now it's a popular sport in its own right. You wear a running belt, your dog wears a specialist running harness and you're attached with a bungee line. Typically your dog is out in front, giving you a boost by pulling you along.

Actidog offers canicross sessions in various locations in West Yorkshire, as well as working with local dog clubs on hosting sessions for their members.

What's 'cani-hike'?

Cani-hiking (or cani-trail) is just like canicross, using the same kind of equipment, but at a slower walking pace. Perfect for going hands-free over longer distances, or those who prefer to hike over running.

How fit do I need to be?

Accepted Answer

You don't need any previous running experience to get started, just the ability to walk at a brisk pace for about 30 minutes. Then you can decide, on increasing your distance, your pace, or both.

Can I do it with a reactive dog?

Accepted Answer

Yes! In fact, many reactive dogs benefit from learning to canicross. Reactive dogs can gain focus and learn to channel their nervous energy into sports like canicross as it gives them a job to do. And as a bonus, unlike other sports like agility or flyball, you're always attached to each other.For highly reactive dogs, we aim for quieter spots at taster locations, or as an alternative, owners are welcome to book a secure field (at their own expense).

Won't my dog pull me over?

You're more likely to be pulled over when walking your dog on collar and lead than if you're canicrossing or cani-hiking. By wearing a hip belt, your dog's pulling power is perfectly balanced at your centre of gravity instead of on one hand. And with bungee lines, you have a built-in shock-absorber for when your dog pulls. When you book an Actidog session, you'll get expert guidance on selecting the right kit and using it well.

Will it encourage my dog to pull on normal walks?

No! If you're using different equipment and commands in the different activities, your dog should pick up when it's time to pull versus walk nicely at heel. Using different training cues and techniques helps with this.

Where are your sessions?

Actidog sessions take place on outdoor trails at selected locations around Halifax, Huddersfield and Wakefield. These are public locations with varying facilities and are shared with members of the public, including other dog owners.
